Eugene Chadbourne a grandi à Boulder, Colorado. Il a commencé à jouer de la guitare à onze ans. Après quelques années à avoir joué dans un groupe de rock, il commence à s’intéresse au jazz et à la musique avant-gardiste. Il devient même chroniqueur de disque. Anthony Braxton décida Chadbourne a se concentrer sur la musique plutôt que sur le journalisme.
Pour échapper au service militaire pendant la guerre du Vietnam, il habite au Canada au début des années 70, puis reviendra s’installer à New-York où il rencontre John Zorn. Le thème de la guerre reviendra souvent dans ses chansons et dans ses livres.
Il se consacre alors en grande partie à l’improvisation libre et sort son premier album solo en 1976 sur son propre label Parachute.
Au début des années 80, il fonde le groupe rock Shockabilly avec Kramer et David Licht.
Jouant de la guitare, du dobro, du banjo et même du rateau électrique (instrument de son invention), il multiplie les mélanges entre styles musicaux : chansons pop, Country & Western, improvisations libres avec de nombreux musiciens de la scène jazz contemporaine (Han Bennink, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Alex Ward), reprises de toutes sortes (Nick Drake, Ornette Coleman, et même du Jean-Sébastien Bach au banjo !)
Il tourne régulièrement aux États-Unis et en Europe, en solo, en duo avec des batteurs (Jimmy Carl Black, Paul Lovens…) ou en plus grandes formations.
Eugene Chadbourne grew up in Boulder, Colorado. He started playing guitar at eleven years old. After a few years playing in a rock band, he began to take an interest in jazz and avant-garde music and started to write about music. At some point, Anthony Braxton told Chadbourne to focus on music rather than journalism, which he did.
To avoid military service during the Vietnam War, he moved to Canada in the early 1970s, then moved back to New York where he met John Zorn. The theme of the war will come back often in his songs and in his books.
He devoted himself largely to free improvisation and released his first solo album in 1976 on his own label Parachute.
In the early 80’s, he founded the rock band Shockabilly with Kramer and David Licht.
Playing guitar, dobro, banjo and even electric rake (instrument he invented), he navigates between musical styles: pop songs, Country & Western, free improvisations with many musicians of the contemporary jazz scene (Han Bennink, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Alex Ward), covers of all kinds (Nick Drake, Ornette Coleman, and even Johann Sebastian Bach banjo!).
He tours regularly in the United States and Europe, solo, duet with drummers (Jimmy Carl Black, Paul Lovens …) or in larger formations.
